One of my Hiknow students, Sabrina, asked how she could get more practice writing in English. I remembered recently seeing a site that is a language exchange specialised in writing. Most language exchange sites are focused on conversation: two people spend some time talking in one person's native language, then change to the other's native language. That way they both get speaking practice in the language they're learning. But Lang-8 specialises in writing: people write in the language they are learning, then native speakers offer corrections. I've added it to the Language Exchange section of the ESL Links. I'm going to sign up and try it out. If you have used it, please give your opinion in the comments. Below is a short video exlanation of Lang-8.

I added a link to an exercise to help you get some practice with these two confusing words.
You can see it on the Conversation Issues > Borrow [versus] Lend page. Because I've only just started this website, please be patient: I'm still experimenting, moving things, adding things etc.
Hopefully it will settle down in a month or two. :D
Update 2016-07-03: Added updated more Wikipedia links, more words and phrases, more examples, more vocab links, more podcasts.
There are a lot of phrases in English to talk about the end of a person's employment. But these phrases can have important differences in meaning.
Yesterday I gave a class called "What is Attraction?", discussing what physical & personality traits people in different cultures find attractive.
Today I found a photo-article about this exact idea, on the website of Newsweek, a major international news magazine: A great overview of how ideas of physical beauty differ among cultures, and some of the things people do to be "more beautiful", ranging from Botox injections to leg-lengthening surgery. Just created my page on Weebly, as I only just found that my students in China couldn't see my existing pages on PBworks and Blogspot; the Communist government blocks those domains.
I googled up a web page with some handy links: How to Check If Your Website Is Blocked In China or Not Using the links there, I confirmed that my PBworks and Blogspot pages were not accessible in China. I've also confirmed that this Weebly website is. For now. |
