"How have you been?" is similar to "How are you?". The difference is about time.
- "How are you?": asking about right now. Typical answer: "I'm fine, thanks."
- "How have you been?" asking about the recent past (since the last time we spoke). Typical answers: "I've been fine, thanks" or "I've been busy lately".
